Betam: Asymmetric Labor Market Effects of the 2008-2009 Crisis

Structural particularities make Turkish LM prone to asymetric shocks.

        Low female participation rate:
            Given that the urban female LFPR is very low at 19.8% in 2007,
            there is room for a strong added worker effect.
        Low coverage of unemployment protection:
            Only 13.8% of unemployed benefited from unemployment insurance in 2009.
            Lower unemployment insurance implies a stronger added worker effect.
        Large informality:
            Low firing costs of unregistered wage earners.
        Large agricultural employment:     
            23.6% of total employment in 2007.
